About Wegovy®
Together with your doctor, you have made the choice to start Wegovy®. Wegovy® has two uses. Your doctor has likely already explained why Wegovy® is appropriate for you.
In addition to a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, Wegovy® is used for chronic weight management in adults who have a BMI of 30 kg/m2 or greater (with obesity) or a BMI of 27 kg/m2 and less than 30 kg/m2 (overweight) and weight-related health problems.
What is obesity?
Obesity is a progressive chronic disease (meaning it requires long-term care), characterized by abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that may negatively affect health. Obesity is caused by more than what we eat or how much we exercise. Complex interactions between our genetics, environment, behaviour, and social factors result in obesity.
Obesity is a treatable disease. You may be starting Wegovy® as part of your weight management journey.
Wegovy® is used to reduce the risk of non-fatal heart attacks in adults with a history of heart disease (like a heart attack, stroke, or poor blood flow to the limbs) and a BMI ≥27 kg/m2.
What is a heart attack?
A heart attack is a type of heart disease. Heart disease is a general term for any condition that affects the structure or function of the heart. A heart attack occurs when blood flow to a section of the heart becomes blocked. This prevents oxygen from getting to the heart, damaging it. The amount of damage caused to the heart depends on how long the blood supply is cut off.
If you have a history of heart disease, your doctor may work with you to help reduce the risk of a heart attack. They may help you to develop lifestyle strategies that help reduce your risk. These may include:
BMI, body mass index.
